NYC Sports Fans: A Spoiled Bunch

Even Spike Is Spoiled...although, being a Knicks fan does mean he's suffered too.

Even Spike is spoiled...although, being a Knicks fan does mean he's suffered too.

New York City is considered the center of the universe.  Ask any native New Yorker, they’ll be all too happy to tell you.  It is a city where you can do almost anything, see almost anything, eat almost anything, and meet almost anyone.  Choices are abundant here.  And, for the most part, that is a great opportunity.

Until it comes to sports.

Let’s look at all the teams in the New York Metro area.  For sake of argument, the New York Metro area will consist of teams that are geographically located within New York City (all five boroughs), on Long Island, and in the eastern New Jersey area (the Meadowlands, specifically).   Baseball fans side with either the New York Yankees or the New York Mets.  Football fans can pick between the New York Giants or the New York Jets (neither of which play in NY, mind you).  Hockey fans hit the trifecta with the New York Rangers, New York Islanders and the New Jersey Devils.  And let’s not forget about basketball fans who can either root for the New York Knicks or the New Jersey (for now) Nets (expected to move to Brooklyn for 2012-2013 season).

Football | Cromartie’s Personal Song!

I’ve purposely been quiet about this weekend’s game between the NY Jets and the NE Patriots, but I can’t help passing this along. It’s way too funny!

This little ditty is pretty much the ONLY thing that has come out of New England this week and it’s not from Tom Brady, Bill Belichick or any of the Patriots.  Great stuff!

Football | It’s All Over: Brett Favre’s Storied Streak Comes To A Whimpering End

Brett Favre with the Vikings Arguably, one of the most impressive streaks has ended. With the announcement that he was on the inactive list last night due to a shoulder injury, Brett Favre‘s consecutive start streak concluded at 297 games (321 including playoff appearances according to Adam Schefter). Like him or not, the man has had an impressive career.

Personally, the records don’t do much for me (see list below). They are impressive, don’t get me wrong, but I do not believe it is what personified him as a player. I was 13 when Favre’s streak started and I remember being a huge fan of his from as far back as I can remember. Maybe it was the green and yellow of the Packers (my middle and high school colors were green and gold) or the fact that he was a gun-slinging, fun-loving guy who obviously just loved playing the game but I just loved watching him play. He always seemed to have a fire in his belly. He was excited when the Packers were on top and emotional when things were not going their way. He played the game I wanted to play the game. Over the years, I grew to admire not only his intensity, but also his intestinal fortitude. This guy would play and play and play, regardless of his state of health. He was a mainstay in the Green Bay offense and that was impressive.  In addition to the consecutive start streak, he has also set the following records:

The Week In Rewind | 12-Dec-2010

Yo Adrian!

- Red Sox fans rejoiced as the hometown club introduced their new hard-hitting first baseman, Adrian Gonzalez, on Monday.  The Sox were able to acquire Gonzalez’s hot bat and nearly perfect glove from the San Diego Padres for a handful of prospects.

- The much-awaited showdown between the New England Patriots and the New York Jets took place on Monday night with not much more than a whimper from the much ballyhooed* Jets.  The Pats won handily, 45-3, solidifying their spot atop the AFC East and gaining and inside track to home field advantage during the playoffs.
